Oh, Halloween. What’s not to love about dressing up and getting candy from neighbors just for uttering three little words?
Unfortunately, as parents, we have a tendency to see past the carefree appeal of the holiday, and look more at potential dangers (cars on the road and poisonous candy to name a few).
Your Halloween can be all treats and no tricks if you follow a few basic safety guidelines.
- Make sure your kiddo's costume fits properly to avoid tripping. If the costumes are dark in color, put reflective tape on the back and front of the costume. Use face paint instead of masks or hoods to help your little one see better while walking the neighborhood.
- Keep your home safe for trick-or-treaters. Remove anything a child could trip over from the porch and front yard. This includes garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
- Accompany young kids on their trick-or-treat route. If your older kids want to go with friends, know what route they’re going to be taking and agree on a specific time to return home.
- Don’t assume you have the right of way as a pedestrian. Motorists may have trouble seeing you in the dark, and just because one car stops doesn’t mean the next one will. Teach your kids to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
- When you get home, give your kids Halloween basket a scan for any unwrapped, rotten or homemade candy. Toss anything you’re not 100% sure is safe.
